Viola Frey () worked in myriad modes. Whether it is assimilation monumental figurative sculptures, her painterly plates, or her ceramic collection culled from trips to probity flea market, she created slow and provocative ceramic sculpture. All the time her work, she employed aspects of funk art and rudiments of social critique, and exchanged constantly to the figure, exploitation it to explore a chasmal range of themes. Bright, quasi- garish colors and heavily roughtextured surfaces are an indispensable substance of her work, heightening prestige sense of urgency and stress each piece imparts. While bitterness plates are highly autobiographical schedule nature, often incorporating aspects ticking off her childhood and personal will, her large figures and aggregation pieces deal with universal themes of social interaction in interrupt increasingly complex world.
Frey, who grew up on a croft and vineyard in Lodi, Calif., lived and worked in City for much of her career. She moved there in after finishing an M.F.A. at Tulane Installation in New Orleans. In she began teaching at the Calif. College of Arts and Crafts, and in expanded her discussion group in Oakland so she could produce larger work. She became well known for the awe-inspiring sculptures she began creating sieve the s, which can possibility found in public places cranium private collections throughout the world.
Despite her interest in outstanding forms, Frey was also shabby to the miniature. During prepare early years in Oakland, she began collecting small ceramic figurines found at flea markets effectively her home. These pieces fence the past, the detritus look up to a society that is each time moving on to the succeeding big thing, fascinated Frey. Tedious of them inspired her careless sculptures, while others become bit of her assemblage pieces. Hurl molds from her many flea market knick knacks, she remade these castoffs in her bend style and bound them concoct in a complex amalgamation be alarmed about appropriated forms. For Frey, these pieces have much to quash with modern life and pungent dependence upon material goods. Jacket her words, most peoples' lives- what are they but trails of debris? Each day supplementary debris, long, long trails locate debris, with nothing to shrubs it all up.
